Final Reflection paper
This semester I have been able to
see what I need to do for my future, and make an academic and career plan to accomplish
my desires. I am in the process of transferring to a school that has the
program I want to pursue. I am planning on getting my bachelor’s degree by the
winter of 2015. That all depends on if I can start school in the fall of 2013.
During the last summer at school I want to do an Internship, to be able to get
experience in the career field as well as a good network going. So that I might
be able to get help finding a job after I graduate. After I graduate I want to
get a job as a petroleum engineer with an oil exploration company. I wouldn’t
mind having to live out of the united states for a bit. I hope to get in with a
good well known company and make a name for myself in the industry, which will
come with a lot of hard work and dedication. The reason I chose this plan is
cause it makes the most sense to me, and I think in the long run its going to
make me the happiest.
At the beginning of this class I had an idea
what I wanted to do, but after this class I know that my idea is what I want to
pursue. I have been able to look into the field and find out more about the industry.
Professor Haynes helped a lot by encouraging me to study it out and make sure
that it is something that I would like and also if it will be a good occupation
choice in the future. So for now I have decided what I want to do for a career
and this class has helped me come to a solid decision.
Out of all of the
things that we have done as a class a couple of the things that helped me the
most was, the informational interview and the job shadow. As well as the top 3
occupations and any other time we were asked to look up the things that we were
interested in. From the informational interview I was able to learn the important
qualities needed to be a good employee on a large company level. From the job
shadow I was able to learn about other areas where petroleum engineers can
work.
I don’t have many
goals for the future but the ones I do have are important to me. These are in
no certain order. I want to get my BS in Petroleum Engineering, which I will accomplish
by focusing all of my time and talents to my classes. I want to have a successful
career in petroleum engineering, which will start by doing well in school and
building relations ships with those who already have a foot in the door. I want
to raise a big family, I am married but it might still be a couple of years
still. And I want to live in an area where I can have a decent sized house and
property with a couple of motorcycles. Those for the most part are my plans for
the future.

star stories
1.
I have seen the effects of team work during my 3
seasons as a fire fighter. Especially during my first season in the hand crew.
When we were called to a fire, we were told the situation and then had to hike
to our designated spot on the fire. When we arrived at the location, we dug a
trench around the fire. Our crew usually consisted of about 20 or more people.
About 5to 8 people used Pulaski’s, a tool used to dig into the ground and cut
roots, and the other half used scraping tools to remove the debris and get to
pure dirt. With this set up we were very efficient and were able to get the job
done quickly. Thus the outcome was that we stopped the fire from spreading any
further.
2.
When I was in
high school I worked at a local dairy, and confronted many challenges, or so
thought of them as challenges at my age. I would always have hoses or pipes
break, that I would have to replace or get the owner to fix. Sometimes it was a
quick fix and other times it took hours. But the biggest challenge I faced was
when I was bringing the cows up to be milked and I didn’t close a gate, which
emptied onto a local road. The cows started spreading in every direction. I
called my boss and told him what had happened; I then got on my motorcycle and
herded some of the cows back toward the barn. When I herded the cows closer
some friends that were passing by helped me get them in. This in return
resulted, in me continuing to milk the cows and get the job done on time.
3.
A couple of years ago I was able to realize a goal that
I had been working towards for years. It was to serve as a full time volunteer
for the church that I am a part of. There were a lot of parts that played into
fulfilling my goal. One of the main parts that I had to accomplish before I
even started the service was the financial part of it. Since it was a voluntary
service I had to save enough money to be able to go. When I was about 17 I
realized that my job at the dairy was not going to be sufficient enough to save
the amount that I needed. So I started to look for opportunities in the
community that would help me save up for the amount I needed. I was interested
in the wild land fire job, and knew that with that job I would make more than
the amount that I needed. I just happened that my boss’s son in-law had worked
at the station I wanted to work at; he put a good word in for me at the
station. I got the job and was able to save more that the amount I needed. This
resulted in me being able to be a volunteer for two years in Brazil. I was able
to accomplish this through networking.

1. When I looked at the events, there were not
any for this semester. There were however events for next semester. There is a
spring career and internship fair in January. There is also a Technology career
fair in February, and a summer part time job fair in March. And on-campus
interviews are to be announced.
2. List 4 services offered by the Career
Development Center.
You are able to
find and contact counselors from the site. They also have many job searching
resources that help in the job searching process. They also offer a free resume
builder that you can use. They also provide a calendar of events, so you can be
to a of those events that can help you in finding a job.
3. Look under the “Students” tab for the “Job
Search Engines”. What are 4 sources the
website suggests you to look for job opportunities? Some that I thought would be beneficial to me
were, careerbuilders.com, student jobs, usajobs, and campuscareercenter.com
4. Locate the names of 4 counselors and tell what
their specific area is.
Jordan Doman, College of Technology
& Computing and College of Aviation & Public Services
Dan Felts, College of Science and Health
Gary Gardener, School of Education and
School of the Arts
Sue Stevenson, College
of Humanities and Social Sciences
5. What
services are available to help you prepare for grad school?
UVU has a graduate exam preparation
center, which will help you prepare for those difficult tests. They have
graduate school fairs, that help you find specific grad programs, and also med
schools. They will help you find the best grad school for you.
6. Find

12. Find
the testimonial page for internships. (http://www.uvu.edu/internships/students/testimonials.html)
View at least one testimonial. Who did
you watch and what did you learn? Look
at the written testimonials. What one
impressed you?
I watched Courtney Kilpack, I learned
that the more internships you do the better. She felt that by her doing her 3
internships, she was able to secure a job by the time she graduated.
I was impressed by all of them, they all
had really good aspects. But I liked Trevor Tooke’s, how he was able to still
stay in the area and meet a lot of local business owners and was even offered
jobs by some of them. Another one that I liked was David Iba, because I speak
Portuguese also. That would be a neat opportunity.
13. What
internship scholarships are available?
There are quite a few internship
opportunities availiable, there are 9 General scholarships, 10 Government
scholarships, and 4 non-profit scholarships. Which im sure go pretty quickly.
14. Take
a look at the Internship Blog and Facebook page. What suggestions do you have that would make these
more helpful?
I thought that the facebook page was
super awesome, I was surprised that it had so much stuff on it. There was a lot
of networking happening when I looked at it. I couldn’t think of anything that
I could come up with that would be more helpful, for this great website. Looks
like you guys are doing it right.
15. Go
go to the “Have a quick Question” box on the internship home page and ask a
question regarding internships. Write
the question you asked below.
Are there a lot of opportunities for
internships in Brazil, or even the Brazilian embassy or the American Embassy in
Brazil?
